Frank Elson

I completed my master’s degree in physics at Royal Holloway, University of London in 2021. My project focused on simulating the Ising Model using Monte Carlo methods. Although this is not new physics by any means, it has helped greatly in the long run by giving me a better understanding of magnetism through this very fundamental model.

My PhD project focuses on quantum materials, specifically magnetism in layered materials, such as spin frustration in honeycomb systems and the possibility of these hosting Majorana fermions. The particular honeycomb materials to be studied in this project also have a possible application in the world of batteries, as a sustainable replacement of Li-ion batteries. Neutron Diffraction and Inelastic Neutron Scattering will be the main tools used to probe the fundamental properties of these materials; however, muon spin resonance (µ+SR) and synchrotron studies will complement these.
