A New Phase for SwedNess
SwedNess has been awarded SEK 48 million by the Swedish Research Council to continue and further develop its national graduate school in neutron and synchrotron-based research during 2026–2028.
Since its launch in 2016, SwedNess has played an important role in building Swedish expertise in neutron and synchrotron methods and strengthening the national user community connected to ESS and MAX IV. The new funding marks the next step in this development, introducing an expanded focus on industrial PhD students and even stronger collaboration between academia, industry, and world-leading research infrastructures.
SwedNess is a national collaboration between Uppsala University, Chalmers University of Technology, Lund University, Stockholm University, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, and Linköping University, providing a strong and multidisciplinary environment for doctoral education.
All doctoral projects will be developed jointly by universities and industrial partners, ensuring scientifically excellent research with clear industrial relevance. Through close collaboration, projects will benefit from combined expertise, resources, co-funding, and active participation from both academic and industrial supervisors.
PhD students will also gain access to the cutting-edge facilities and analytical capabilities available at ESS and MAX IV, creating unique opportunities for advanced research and innovation.
The call for doctoral projects is planned to open after the summer. Researchers and companies are encouraged to begin discussions and develop collaborative project ideas already now.
